Beginners
Students Aged 7 - 12
After the first one or two lessons with a student I will make a decision as to which series of books they will learn from. The choice will be made based on one or more of the following factors: learning style, long-term goals, attention span, and available practice time. In either series students will complete all requirements up until the end of Level 2 and then we discuss which direction they would like to take their piano studies after that: classical, pop, jazz, improvisation, composition etc.
Piano Safari
This series focuses on six elements of learning:
-
Reading pieces: students will learn to read music first just using symbols and finger numbers and then transition to notes on the staff. Initially the notes will be in close proximity to one another and then the distances will increase and both hands will learn to play together.
-
Rote pieces:: these pieces are to be learned solely through the student imitating the teacher. It allows students to play more complicated pieces than they can read as well as developing their memorization skills.
-
Folk songs: when students learn songs they have likely heard before or can easily sing to, it increases the musicality and enjoyment in learning
-
Technical exercises: learning different motions of the fingers, hand, wrists, and arm is fundamental to creating a beautiful sound at the piano
-
Improvisation: opportunities to improvise with and without the teacher are interspersed throughout the book so that students develop their own creativity and are not limited to only reading notation
-
Sight reading: being able to read a new passage of music with minimal preparation time really allows the student to focus on finding the patterns in the notation and strategize through unfamiliar passages

Piano Adventures
Each of the levels in the Piano Adventures series has four main books that emphasize different elements of piano playing:
-
Lesson Book: introduces rhythmic notation (notes and rests), increases the range of notes that a student can read, focuses on chords so that students can harmonize with their own playing
-
Technique & Artistry Book:: has small pieces that focus on the technical element that is needed to perform their corresponding Lesson Book piece well
-
Theory Book: games, activities, and worksheets to emphasize concepts in the Lesson Book
-
Performance Book: repertoire that is suitable for recitals and acts as a culminating task for each unit accomplished in the Lesson Book

Teen and Adult Beginners
Piano Safari
For adult and teen beginners, I typically start with the Piano Safari for the Older Beginner Level 1 followed by Piano Safari for the Older Beginner Level 2, and then Piano Safari for the Older Beginner Level 3. Each level takes approximately six to eight months to complete. There are two books in each level: Repertoire & Technique and Sight Reading & Theory. By completing these levels, students will develop skills in note and rhythm reading, improvisation, and composition, and will learn pieces by rote (without using music), play with backing tracks, and understand how music is written.

Piano Adventures
As an alternate, some of my students use the Faber and Faber Accelerated Method for the Older Beginner books with the complementary Technique and Artistry Book. There are two levels in this series and then it merges with their main series. These books develop music and rhythm reading skills and work very well with the backing tracks on the corresponding app. They cover music from a variety of different cultures and styles so that students can make a more informed decision of what they’d like to do after these books are complete.
Note: I do not use the "Adult Piano Adventures" books as they take far to long for students to get through and are too slow paced for most teen and adult beginners.

Once either of these series is complete, students may choose from several different paths to continue their musical journey. They could further explore classical repertoire through curriculums of the Royal Conservatory of Music or Conservatory Canada; the pop/contemporary curriculum through the American Popular Piano books by Christopher Norton; or the Pattern Play books by Forrest Kinney to learn and develop in improvisation ….the options are numerous!
